Baca St. Onge moved to Colorado from South Padre Island, Texas, where she owned a stained glass studio that employed 11 people. She has over 30 years experience as a stained glass artist. She started her dichroic glass jewelry business 3 years ago. Because of her extensive background working with glass, she understands how colors and contrasts work with this medium.
Baca’s fused glass is designed and hand crafted one piece at a time in her studio in the Mountains of Colorado. Each individual piece of dichroic art glass is cut, carefully layered and fired in her kiln at temperatures up to 1500 degrees. The firing take 12 hours and often requires multiple firings to achieve the affect she is after. All of the pieces are kiln annealed for strength.
Dichroic glass was developed by NASA for the space program. It was never used by NASA, therefore allowing artists like Baca to use the glass for art. Because of the properties of dichroic glass and the alchemy that takes place in the kiln, she never knows what the finished piece will look like. She can make an educated guess, but it is still a guess.
Besides showing in the Boulder St. Gallery, Baca is also showing in The Art Center of Estes Park and the Madison and Maine Gallery in Greeley. |
